  1. If religion can be classified as a cult then Romania’s “Beyond The Hills” deserves a mention. An utterly scary film on the powers of persuasion and influence.

    1. Thanks for the recommendation. I will have to check this out. I also love foreign-language films, and Romania is not the country that comes immediately to mind when you think European films. This will be exciting.

  2. I’d suggest “Holy Smoke” (1999). Kate Winslet and Harvey Keitel, directed and cowritten by Jane Campion. Winslet’s family believes she’s fallen in with a cult and hires deprogrammer Keitel to free her from it. It doesn’t go as planned.

    1. Holy Smoke looks so interesting, thanks! Never seen it before, even though I really admire the work of Jane Campion. And Winslet and Keitel there? It’s a must-see for me. I generally feel that Campion’s work is underrated. Well, maybe not the Portrait of a Lady, but for years now I like to review Campion’s In the Cut. This film really deserves much more recognition and audience’s love than it got. It also seems that Campion does not mind to get into deep controversial things in her films – crime and sex in in the Cut and here you say religious zeal, the power of cults and its consequences in Holy Smoke. Interesting.
